Where?
The Gunmakers gastropub, Eyre Street Hill, EC1

Drank
Cascade ale
Why?
Nostalgia visit. Used to snatch romantic bites there with the love of my life – or so I thought then!
Is it still the same?
No way! I hate him! Oh, you mean the pub… Yes & no. Yes, still shabby chic furniture/decor-wise. No, food a lot more modern & three times dearer. You used to be able to get meat & two veg for three quid. (Oh but it tasted so delicious when young & in love…) Now they’ve added exotic things like mushroom ravioli and smoked chorizo stew.
Verdict?
Nice comfort food with a bit of style, quiet country pub atmosphere, down-to-earth designer/media crowd.
What else can you get there?
Steak sandwich, haggis (below) and ham, egg & chips.
Good for?
Hangover food. Real ale. And it still has that romantic lunchtime bolt hole feel (call me sentimental). Good for quiet lunches & suppers with friends, colleagues, lovers, or all three in one if you’re lucky!
